The name Marilyn Monroe instantly brings to mind a picture of the beautiful blond movie star. The iconic image of Marilyn in her wind-blown white dress is synonymous with beauty and sensuality and as well-known as any star from any age.
Born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, and known during her early years as Norma Jeane Baker, she endured a tough life as a child. Her mother was committed to a mental institution when Norma was young, and she was put into the foster care system. At age eleven, after spending years in foster homes and orphanages, she was taken in by family friends. For five years, she experienced stability, but at age sixteen the family could no longer keep her for financial reasons.
She married her neighbor, Jimmy Dougherty, partly to avoid going back to the orphanage. It was a happy marriage, but while Jimmy was in the service, Norma was discovered by a local photographer and built a reputation as a model. She divorced Jimmy in order to concentrate on her budding career.
Changing her name to Marilyn Monroe and signing a contract with a movie studio were the next steps. Small movie roles led to bigger ones until her big breakthrough in 1953's Niagara. She was a true star, a blonde bombshell in the best Hollywood tradition, by the age of 27.
She married two more times, to baseball giant Joe DiMaggio and to playwright Arthur Miller. Sadly, both of those marriages ended in divorce also. Her last movie was The Misfits, in which Arthur Miller had penned a role especially for Marilyn. Several months later, she died unexpectedly at the young age of 36.
Although remembered primarily for the sexuality she exuded in movies such as Some Like It Hot, Marilyn wanted to be a serious actress, and studied in New York for a time under Lee Strasberg at his Actor's Studio. She was loved by millions who only knew her through the movies, and by all who knew her personally. Marilyn was an inspiration to those who struggle through hardships and obstacles to survive and achieve personal success.
