The Playboy Bunny Club opened in Chicago in February of 1960. Based on a famous Chicago club called the Gaslight Club, the tuxedoed bunnies offered elegance and class which had customers coming from all over. The curvaceous waitresses in bunny ears and tail quickly became part of the Playboy brand. Playboy Clubs were established in many cities, and girls lined up to take the bunny training and receive their tails.
Playboy Magazine was first published in 1953 by budding entrepreneur Hugh Heffner. He had worked in publishing field, including a stint at Esquire--up until then the most popular men's magazine--studied psychology, and come to the realization that a new kind of men's magazine was needed. Heffner had a vision of a magazine that would celebrate healthy sexuality and help rid the country of its repressed attitudes towards sexual mores.
He wanted to issue a well-rounded magazine that published literary fiction as well as pictures. Many well-known writers have been published in Playboy, including Ray Bradbury, P. G. Wodehouse, John Steinbeck and Gore Vidal. "The Interview" with various celebrities, notably Jimmy Carter, and Martin Luther King, Jr., was another Playboy innovation. Yes, the nude pictures were a huge draw, but there was true literary merit behind it all.
Marilyn Monroe graced the first cover of Playboy, without her consent, and was joined over the years by many other beautiful women, including Jayne Mansfield, Denise Richards, Drew Barrymore, Latoya Jackson and Pamela Anderson.
The bunny symbol still stands for elegance and class today. It symbolizes not so much the sexual aspect of the bunnies and playmates as it does the cosmopolitan, urbane side of men that they desire to show the world.
